Portable storage will always be an evolving part of our everyday life. We tend to overlook our scientific advancements in such a fast-moving world, but it’s astonishing to look back & appreciate how far we’ve come.
In the 1960s, computers used to be the size of refrigerators, while one megabyte of storage could cost up to $10,000! People would dream of having technology like this in their home but soon changed as we entered the home computing era.
The 1980s birthed the digital age of civilization & is what we know as the 3rd Industrial Revolution. Personal computers became common, and after twenty years of revisions, the floppy disks were now an affordable staple for the general public.
Floppy disks are a type of disk storage composed of a thin and flexible magnetic storage medium. They are sealed in a rectangular plastic while enclosed with fabric that removes dust particles. Initially, they were 8 and 5.5 inches until researched to a public standard of 1.44 MB at 3.5 inches.
As advancements continued, the floppy disk was soon obsolete in 1995 as compacts disk took prevalence, but the floppy disk served as a pivotal piece in the home computing era. Next time you’re saving to your cloud storage, flash drive, it’s good to know this piece of history will always remain branded as our universal save icon.
